I've always been drawn to ambiguity in painting. It has been more interesting to spend time figuring out what I'm looking at than to have my images spoon-fed to me. Painting with ambiguity helps give me a sense of freedom since I'm not held down by symbolism I'm more active and engaged in what I am working on. This isn't to say that all formal elements are thrown away but they are instead used as a foundation and not as a blueprint. I find that working in abstraction captures the fleeting moments and constantly changing rhythm of life better than any other form of representation. This allows me to explore an array of themes and ideas in my work along with a larger range of scale and paint application. |
