"I find that I am most interested and attuned to the subtext; that which lurks beneath the surface of people's relationships with each other and with themselves. A desire to examine the human psyche, the process of becoming and its physical manifestation in the human face and body is divulged in my paintings of people. These figures, whether real or imagined, are often engaged in an internal emotional experience which can be interpreted in different ways. Their physical space is intentionally ambiguous in an attempt to create an open narrative and to engage the viewer in questions of meaning."

"This series of work is organized around the concept of play and its whimsical expression. Color and pattern are key compositional and expressive elements of the work. The experience of deep, unaffected joy felt by a child who is fully present in his or her body is a theme I am deeply attracted to. The rhythms of a bright, hot Chico summer, are present in the high key palettes and rich surfaces of the paintings. The portraits are of people in my life who live with a passionate intensity that inspires those around them."
