Fifteen Year Owl Study

“A huge sycamore tree overlooks the Lindo Channel. Barn owls have used this tree cavity for over 20 years. Since it became large enough for them to enter, there have been many guests. The advent of digital camera equipment and my acquiring of some long and fast lenses has allowed me to document the comings and goings of the owls. They are mostly nocturnal and generally do not make an appearance in decent light. The photos show the scene brighter than it actually was. Some of the images had to be lifted from the dark in photoshop. Standing with a monopod at dusk I would wait for 30 to 45 minutes to get a shot. Some owls just use the condo as a rental for a day or so, others raised a family and called it home for the season. Having been hatched there I noticed some of the offspring would come back and use the place to rest, preen, eat and prep for their next hunt. “
