"I am a daily painter who finds it necessary to escape the callings of common, every day life and retreat into the studio: my sanctuary, the casing for my internal life. Much of my motivation to make art stems from the peace and freedom I find in the studio where I attempt to express all the yearnings I experience that go far beyond the visible. Then, inevitably, it becomes time to return to the temporal world to pick up some groceries...... My intention with my work is to portray life's stunning contradictions in the most authentic and beautiful way I can."

Chico Paper Company is pleased to present a new collection of work from local painter Richard Whitehead. In the past, Richard's bright and colorful abstract paintings have invoked a sense of youthfulness and fun, while addressing the ideas of balance, beauty, humanity and spirituality through a mix of paint, metal, and found objects.
In his latest series, you can see a progression from completely abstract, to almost impressionistic representational forms and objects. While still keeping true to his signature bright palette, painterly brush strokes, and thick pigment, these pieces have created a new visual experience you won't want to miss. Come into the shop to view them now or see them in the window this August!
The Great Art Upgrade is over. Thank you to all who took advantage of this special offer.

Tundra Series: Snowy Owls, by: Janet Turner (1914-1988)
Janet Turner, born April 7, 1914 in Kansas City, Missouri, was a loved and respected member of our community from 1959, when she came to teach art education at Chico State College, until her death in 1988 at the age of 74. Within a few years after her arrival in Chico, she became a member of the newly formed department of fine arts where she planned, developed and coordinated courses in printmaking. She was internationally known as an artist, espically for her complex prints, which are in museums and private collections in many parts of the world. She was named Outstanding Professor of the California State University system in 1978 (Butte County Historical Society Diggin's, Winter 1989).
Carmel by the Sea, by Jake Early
Jake Early’s latest release, Carmel by the Sea will be available May 1, 2010. This numbered and signed series is limited to 160 pieces per image. Available at Chico Paper Company.
Jake Early’s design work and printmaking have earned him much notoriety. A California native, Early produces unique serigraphs on his hand-made printing screen-press, designed and built in his Chico studio. His simple illustrative style, bold color palette, and strong depiction of place all resonate with collectors. Early’s trademark is his use of metallic inks, created by mixing powdered metals into an ink base. These inks capture and reflect light, shifting the mood of each print as lighting conditions change. Creator of the “National Parks image - Whiskeytown,“ the “Seasons” series, “Chico Palio” his inaugural “Chico Landmark series,“ “Chico Street” series, the “Bidwell Park Centennial” series, “California Highway 1” series, and Early’s latest endeavor “Sideways" series. Early is a graduate of the graphic design program at California State University, Chico and studied at the School of Fine Arts in Seville, Spain.
Ray Strong Ray Strong’s professional career spanned nine decades and until his death in 2006 at the age of 101, he was active in painting, teaching, and promoting preservation of the land. He instilled a way of experiencing the land, not just viewing it. “If you want to get to know the land, go and sleep with it,” Strong said. His public-spiritedness represented by his entire body of work, along with commissions he chose to accept, continued throughout his life.
Chelsea Gilmore I've always been drawn to ambiguity in painting. It has been more interesting to spend time figuring out what I'm looking at than to have my images spoon-fed to me. Painting with ambiguity helps give me a sense of freedom since I'm not held down by symbolism I'm more active and engaged in what I am working on. This isn't to say that all formal elements are thrown away but they are instead used as a foundation and not as a blueprint. I find that working in abstraction captures the fleeting moments and constantly changing rhythm of life better than any other form of representation. This allows me to explore an array of themes and ideas in my work along with a larger range of scale and paint application.
Jana Olson's lighting obsession at Chico Paper Company.
These Chandeliers and table top lamps at first glance appear as lightening structures of days gone by...then the ah ha moment of clarity hits when you understand they are constructs of kitchen implements composed to create new forms. Lighting has been a fascination and profession for Jana Olson for the last 20 years. During most of that time, she owned and operated a store in the Bay Area called Omega Too. At Omega Too her motto was "everything you need to make your house look old". At that time she became quite skilled at restoration and repair of antique lights. She sold the business in 2006 to focus her attention on the repair and fabrication of lightening. Using all types of teapots, coffeepots, coffee cups, saucers and compatible parts. Because of her knowledge of lightning construction, she is able to create real functional art lights using unusual parts.
