Want to improve your space? Here are 5 ways to make a more artful home

1. Making an artful home is not hard, but it can be intimidating. First, you will need inspiration. Do you like bright & airy spaces, or do you prefer moody, cozy nooks? Are you into fun, sunny colors or are neutral textures more your style? We recommend looking at your favorite home magazines or interior design websites to help start the process. Pinterest is another great place to gather ideas.

2. Take time to visualize your space. Think about using unique pieces you already have, and add a few new, original works of art to your space. Cut pieces of paper to the size of artwork you wish to get and tape them to the wall where you think you want to hang it. Take your time, live with it a few days. You’ll know if it’s a good fit; listen to your gut.

3. Make it unique! Custom frame your favorite things… items that tell the story of YOU. War-time letters and old photographs of your parents/grandparents help tell your story, as do early versions of your kids artistic genius. Have a favorite album or two from your high school days? Get them on the wall! If it makes you feel warm and fuzzy, and inspires sentiment, you’re batting a thousand.

4. You get extra credit for mismatching! An artful home doesn’t feel like a motel room and great art doesn’t match your sofa! Don’t be afraid to combine the things you love if they don’t “go”. An eclectic mix of artwork, furnishings, textures and color are much more interesting.

5. Add sculptural objects. You don’t have to have a marble bust to upgrade your room, but you should have statement pieces that highlight shape and space. A simple stack of books next to the couch, or an artful, funky lamp will keep your eye moving throughout the room.

6. Last but not least, get that furniture away from the walls! An artful home doesn’t have everything pushed to the edges. Think of angling your bed in the corner. Placing the rug squarely under the footboard gives the bed permission to be playful, and anchors it in your space. Add a few pillows, a new painting and you have a whole new room!
